Analytic Gravitational-Force Calculations for Models of the Kuiper Belt

چکیده

We use analytic techniques to study the gravitational force that would be produced by different Kuiper-Belt mass distributions. In particular, we study the 3-dimensional rings (and wedge) whose densities vary as the inverse of the distance, as a constant, as the inverse-squared of the distance, as well as which varies with the Boss-Peale model. These analytic calculations yield physical insight into the physics of the problem. They also verify that physically viable models of this type can produce neither the magnitude nor the constancy of the Pioneer anomaly. April 5, 2008 PACS: 95.10.Eg, 96.50.Dj, 96.50.Jg

Secular Resonance Sweeping in a Self–gravitating Planetesimal Disk, with Application to the Kuiper Belt

One of the more puzzling aspects of the Kuiper Belt is the high orbital inclinations exhibited by Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs). This swarm of distant comets have apparent inclinations of ∼ 15◦ that to date have defied all simple explanations. Several distinct models have been offered as explanations for the Kuiper Belt’s dynamical excitation: gravitational stirring by protoplanets that may have o...

Planet Formation in the Outer Solar System

This paper reviews coagulation models for planet formation in the Kuiper belt, emphasizing links to recent observations of our and other solar systems. At heliocentric distances of 35–50 AU, single-annulus and multiannulus planetesimal accretion calculations produce several 1000 km or larger planets and many 50–500 km objects on timescales of 10–30 Myr in a minimum-mass solar nebula. Planets fo...

Accretion in the Early Kuiper Belt I. Coagulation and Velocity Evolution

We describe planetesimal accretion calculations in the Kuiper Belt. Our evolution code simulates planetesimal growth in a single annulus and includes velocity evolution but not fragmentation. Test results match analytic solutions and duplicate previous simulations at 1 AU. In the Kuiper Belt, simulations without velocity evolution produce a single runaway body with a radius ri ∼> 1000 km on a t...

Formation of Kuiper-belt binaries through multiple chaotic scattering encounters with low-mass intruders

The discovery that many trans-neptunian objects exist in pairs, or binaries, is proving invaluable for shedding light on the formation, evolution and structure of the outer Solar system. Based on recent systematic searches it has been estimated that up to 10% of Kuiper-belt objects might be binaries. However, all examples discovered todate are unusual, as compared to near-Earth and main-belt as...
